Greece has many islands, each with their own appeal, so choosing one to see is hard. Hard like the MCAT, not like a stone. But, after much debate, and everyone we talked to making the same recommendation, we ended up on the island of Santorini.
The islands are famous for their churches, painted white with blue roofs. The churches seem to fade into the sky and clouds.
Unfortunately for us, the first day and a half were wet, cold, windy, and overcast. We didn't let that keep us from going on a hike up over the little town of Perissa where we were staying. Plus, we always like to include photos of us on the edge!
Our second night on Santorini we went to the far corner of the island to a town called Oia, which is completely color-coordinated like other parts of the island (white and blue -- like the Greece flag) and a magnificent place to see sunset. We arrived and were a little worried we might get clouded out.
A picture is worth a 1000 words. We expect them on our desk(top) by 0800 hours Greenwich standard time.
Fortunately the clouds broke just enough to provide a canvas for the sun to paint a sunset.
The island is relatively small, so we rented an ATV to get around. With a top speed of 30 mph, 9 mph if we were going uphill, the island had to be small for us to get anywhere.
Looking at this photo, you can see part of the caldera. Santorini is a volcano, with the ocean in the middle being the crater. Part of the crater fell away into the ocean after an eruption many years ago. Even today, there are hot springs on the island in the middle of the caldera, and earthquakes are a very real threat.
White church, blue sky, white clouds.
Take a good hard look at this photo. Notice every detail. Got it? Okay...
...now find that dome in this photo. You've played Where's Waldo. Now, let's play Where's Church-o.
We wanted to wish everyone who celebrates a Happy Easter, and we hope you take some time this Sunday to enjoy the amazing sunset. Now go get those eggs!
